We (Firwood) had two great games against St Paul's last year and it was fantastic to witness another. Unlike the games last season, this one went in our favour, which was nice.
Despite missing two key players (one of whom is still in hospital after a freak horrific accident last Saturday), we put in a great performance.
First ten minutes or so we saw end to end action with both sides looking dangerous up front. Penketh were eventually rewarded for their efforts and took the lead with a good goal. However, we quickly struck back and made it level.
We then took control of the game and took a deserved 3-1 lead thanks to an industrious centre midfield partnership and great finishing from the forwards.
However as the second half wore on, St Paul's kept up their work rate and through a freaky own goal and a defensive error, they found themselves level at 3-3. Then it was St Paul's turn to boss the game. They enjoyed good possession but couldn't quite find the net. After somehow not converting a goal mouth scramble, we managed to break and take the lead with a swift counter attack.
As St Paul's pushed for an equaliser, we grabbed a fifth through a great strike from Ashley with the last kick of the ball.
5-3 final score. Great game and both sides can be pleased with their performance. We're already looking forward to playing them again.
