Friendly: Firwood FC v Hazel Grove 2 (6-2)This took place last Saturday.
First thing to point out is that our pitch was in a dreadful condition - the grass clearly hadn't been cut for a while and the lines hadn't been done for the new season so it was far from perfect conditions: so well done to both sides for getting on with the game and giving it everything. We've been promised that the pitch will be ready for the first competitive game of the season.
This was our first game back after a nice summer break and the work that the lads have been putting into training paid off.
It started fairly evenly, we got a goal only for Hazel Grove to pull level. However, Joe Brady scored a great goal to gap a wonderful bit of build up play and we (Firwood) were 2-1 up at half time.
Hazel Grove started the second half very well and managed to level the score line again at 2-2 and I wondered if it would be back and forth all game. However, despite and injury to Dale at right back, we managed to finally start converting the chances that we'd been missing in the first half. As the game went on we got better and better and ran out 6-2 winners. Goals from: Joel M, Joe Brady, Jonny B, Dave Kearns, Andy Smith & Nathan Milnes.
All in all it was a positive pre-season friendly, but there is still a lot we can improve on.
Thanks go to Hazel Grove 2 - the pitch conditions didn't help them, but they showed signs of being able to dominate the play when in possesion. I expect they'll do well this season.
